Giovanni Apollonio
PITTORI
Self-portrait with hat and pipe
Position in the museum
GROUND FLOOR Room 1
A youthful work by Giovanni Apollonio, this self-portrait, painted in 1903, stands out for its vibrancy and its ability to capture fine details.
The piece is rich in elements and painted with swift, confident brushstrokes. The brim of the hat, the cravat, and the pipe smoke are rendered with great precision, resulting in a realistic portrait full of personality.
The self-portrait once belonged to Countess Sofia Felissent Moresco, a dear friend of Apollonio, whom she greatly admired, and an amateur painter herself. Upon her death in 1944, the countess bequeathed her collection of Apollonio’s works to the Municipal Art Gallery of Treviso, where it can still be admired today.
