The author of this painting is Eugenio Bosa, born in Venice in 1807.
His family comes from Bassano del Grappa and is specialized in sculpture.
Initially, Bosa worked as a sculptor, but later developed a passion for painting and drawing. He specialized in painting scenes of everyday life, curious subjects, and situations from the Venetian environment in which he lived. His works became very popular among Italian and foreign collectors who visited Venice.
In the large canvas titled The Lottery Draw, Bosa paints the Piazzetta San Marco as the backdrop, with the Doge's Palace, St. Mark's Basilica, and the Loggetta of the Campanile.
These majestic monuments evoke the glorious history of the Serenissima, but contrast with the disordered presence of the people crowding the square: there are street vendors, mothers and children, pets, and musicians; some chat with each other, others hurry to leave the Piazzetta, while some climb one of the columns, as the lucky winner is lifted on the shoulders of his companions.
The Lottery Draw is Bosa's final work, and when he had reached the height of his success, he decided to stop painting.
