Giuseppe Fabiano, known as Bepi, was born in Trani, Puglia, in 1883, but moved to Treviso at a young age. Fabiano trained as a painter at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, where he attended the lessons of Guglielmo Ciardi. Unlike Ciardi's landscape painting, Fabiano preferred drawing and caricature. From 1911 to 1914, the artist lived in Paris, where he met graphic designers and poster artists, specializing in illustration and caricature. He became a member of the "Société des dessinateurs-humoristes." In 1912, in Paris, he also met Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini, who were exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne. Like Martini, he sent twelve caricatures of well-known Treviso personalities from France, which he exhibited at the "Mostra italiana d’arte umoristica e di caricatura." During and after the Great War, he worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines. In the early 1920s, he moved to Rome. Later, he distanced himself from caricature style and became involved with the "Novecento" art movement, which advocated for painting inspired by classical traditions. He exhibited with this group in Milan in 1926, presenting works such as Giovinetta con natura morta, which is part of the Museo Bailo collection. In 1927, Bepi returned to live in Treviso, regularly participating in local and Venetian exhibitions. In 1936, he moved to Padua. Donne in maschera, created in 1927, reflects his connection to the "Novecento" movement. The settings are essential, the figures are solid, the colors balanced, and the overall composition conveys a sense of stillness. The work became part of the civic collections thanks to a donation in 1989 from the Associazione Amici dei Musei di Treviso.
